Way to go Dan! That's fast. Last year I did it in 5 hours (4.5 on the bike) but took the "farmer's field" route which would account for some of that. You had quite a day! Good on ya.

Thanks Martin. I geared up my 525, I'm going to try to find time to ride as much of it as I can this week....How is the schedule looking for the shuttle service? I will most likely need some help with that. Are any other groups riding this week?

Thanks for the shuttle ride Martin, that worked out great . I did T1 day 2. I ran 209 miles in 5hr and 47min. Ave speed of 36mph. The rain kept the dust down and the trails could not have been any better. Other then 2 atv riders right at the start I had the whole route to my self. It could not have been any better.

Our friend Mark Sampson, a.k.a. " BigDog" stopped by yesterday. Mark and two riding companions recently covered almost 4000 miles on a pair of WR250's and a WR450 on a trip from Mexico to Canada and back that included big portions of T1, all of T2 and much more - unsupported! An impressive feat of riding, ride planning and just plain grit. We are in awe. This is a visionary feat that should serve as in inspiration to all interested in the Tour of Idaho. Mark gets a big old "good on ya's" from everyone at MoJazz. That's the way you do it, brother. We'll let you tell your own story in your own time but we'd like to be the first to give you a big old shout. Salude.

Dan - you are riding really well! My best time over the same course is just a little faster and I was trying to ride as fast as I could. Salude brother.

I've been waiting to ask this question until I had time to read through your website and the forums. I don't think I've missed anything over the last two weeks of reading, however I have taken in a lot of information and may have forgot something. Forgive me if this is the case...
After reading through Martin's solo journey report, it seems as if the Oxford Ridge atrea on day 1, as well as the Massacre Mountain area are the two more difficult parts of the 1300 miles.
If I am correct in this, would it be a fair assumption to make that if a rider made it through the Oxford area and the rest of day 1, they might have the skills necessary to complete the remainder of the ride, including Massacre Mountain?
I do realize that there are so many other variables such as weather, rider fatigue, mechanical issues.
My though right now is to take a day and go ride from Utah to Pocatello, and then see about finishing the rest of the ride at a later time.
Also, I'm not finding the shuttle info right now. Maybe it has something to do with the time of this post and not being as awake as I should be. I'll look again in the morning as well, but if possible, can someone tell me approximately what the price would be to transport 2 riders and bikes south?
Thanks in advance, Mike
PS Yes, I know that the answer may be to go ride T2 before attempting T1, but T2 will probably be rideable later in the season than T1, so would prefer to give T1 a shot.

Hello Mike, If you can make it through Oxford Basin without any undue difficulty you'll be fine at Massacre Mountain. MML is scarier but technically no more difficult and the hard part is less than a mile as opposed to five or six. Pete King Trail is currently closed but if it were open it's easier than the other two technical sections. Shuttle from Lionshead Park back to Pocatello for two riders and bikes is 650 miles and takes a very full day. Normally for that we'd charge $400 which includes the cost of fuel and all of the driver's meals, motel, etc.,a and is in a very comfortable vehicle. For a little less we can come get you in a smaller vehicle. If the driver has to stay more than one night to wait it's a little more to cover the cost of a extra motel and meals. After that it's .50 cents a loaded mile so it depends on how far into Utah we are going.

One of the advantages to the Tour of Idaho shuttle ride. Rainbows over Mt. Borah. Yeah, yeah - it's not as hillbilly chic as a photo of a bunch of guys pissing in a stream, but we kinda dig it.

I just did Arco to Challis. I unloaded just outside of Arco so the ride was only 123 miles. I did it in 3.5 hours. since I was riding alone I kept the speed down. Also, I was watching my gas and water so I skipped the Massacre Mtn loop. When I got into Challis I found my rear wheel bearings were toast so that was the end of my ride. Thanks for the recovery shuttle Martin.

Thanks for the shuttle ride today Dan. Did T1, day 1 in 5:39:37 total time over a distance of 129.7 miles. Rolling time was probably about 20 minutes less. I'll have to analyze the GPS data to figure it out. I made a mistake by not gearing down (I rode my 14-47 which was way too tall) and stalled the bike several times on some of the steeper climbs. Other than that it was pretty trouble free. I feel pretty good about this time because last year when I rode it in 5 hours I started at the campground a few miles north of the border and didn't go all the way into Pocatello (because I was headed to American Falls). If I take my time over the same section by comparison I shaved about 30 minutes off my previous P.R. The bike ran great and I'm close to getting the suspension dialed just the way I like it. Thanks again.

Glad you mentioned gearing. I was going to run it again Fri. or Sat and thought after last time I would keep the bike geared up....I will be sure to gear it back down. I think I am going to run the same route, Boundary Trail all the way North, but take the big loop through Black Rock up to Chinese Peak.
Quota, If you want to join me for a Utah to Pocatello ride let me know.....I prefer Fri for less atv traffic but I could go Fri, Sat, or Sun.

Dan - Just uploaded my data from T1. Here are the totals.
All times are actual times, I'd have to do some work to get the rolling times but in most cases these would be at least a little less.
Utah to Pocatello - 5:39:37, 129.9 miles Pocatello to American Falls - 3:52:24 (including 30 minutes ducking the rain), 97.44 miles American Falls to Arco - 2:57:11 (including BSB), 88.95 miles Arco to Challis - 5:23:03 (including MML), 140.2 miles Challis to Shoup - 3:59:02 (including an hour at Twin Peaks LO), 122.91 Shoup to Elk City - 5:55:54 (the long way - over Long Tom Ridge), 184.32 Elk City to Lowell - 1:30:02, 51.21 miles Lowell to Wallace - 10:31:02, 260.42 miles Wallace to Priest River - 6:01:33, 125 miles
I don't have any data from Priest River to Upper Priest Lake but I believe that it took a couple of hours and is about 50 miles.
Mileage total (to Priest River): 1200:15 Actual time (adding day totals): 45.5 hours

Dan, I would be interested in a Utah - Pocatello. Fridays are often good for me. I'm hoping to be on the road this Friday to deliver a bike that someone is interested in buying. But, if that doesn't happen it may work. Another Friday could be fine as well.
I'll PM you with my contact info.

Martin, I hope I didn't jinx you when I asked about gearing on the fo-fitty. The floridabama group I'm coming out with with be arriving/landing in Pocatello this Saturday. We will take off on Sunday, starting with your day 2 route. There is a group setup on FB is you care to follow "Tour of the Tater 2010". I will be going by to patronize Pocatello Powersports on Sat. afternoon. Thanks again for providing this great site/forum. I can't wait to get out in your part of the country. It would be great to meet you if you are around. Jason

Nah - just plain old hard-headness along with a dollop of too lazy to change out a countershaft sprocket! You'll be good for the part of the Tour you are doing with a 14 - 49.
We'll be around Sat so if you visit the TID flagpole say hi.
