Group of 3 planning the T1 Aug 18 2010, we also are going to check out day 1 out of Utah mid July, checking for snow, snags and steepness. We'll bring a TE610, DRZ400E, and a YZ250 in mid July :d/

I've ran it from Pocatello to Sedgwick Peak and back on Sunday, it's all clear. If I get a chance to I am going to check out Oxford Ridge this weekend.
If it is all clear I will be sure to post it.

I think I'm going to do a quick T2 this weekend. Over to JV on Sunday and back on Monday. Will probably have to do to do one of the northern variants in the western part of the state because I doubt that the prospects for getting across the Owyhee at Crutcher Crossing will be much better than they were 10 days ago.

I'll make sure to do the ATV trails around Black Pine Peak and see how they are this year either over or back.

Pocatello Power Sports (http://www.rideidaho.net/) is once again offering one day in and out service for most Tour of Idaho related issues. Both T1 and T2 come through Pocatello in the early stages of each Tour and PPS is the place to stop for all of your bike service or parts needs.

If you want to contact the folks at PPS in advance to make sure that they have tires, chains, tubes, etc. in stock for your bike or to make an appointment you may do so by calling directly: 208-232-8100 or by emailing them at ppssales@cableone.net or ppsjasonweeks@yahoo.com.

This is a really great shop owned and operated by riders (good ones too). We cannot recommend Pocatello Power Sports highly enough for all of your Tour of Idaho needs.

On Friday I am thinking about doing Arco to Challis round trip. I ran into some guys that were working on the radio towers above challis and they said 2 weeks ago there was only one small drift on top of the pass. They were able to get around worry free in a Power Stroke.
I can't get away for T2, let me know if you can go to challis on Friday.

Martin, I forgot it was 154 miles Arco to Challis. For some reason I thought it was a lot shorter. I will have to hold off or make shuttle arrangements to safely keep it 1 day.

The first group of T2 folks came through yesterday and I met them down at PowerSports while they were having a tire changed. A couple of nice guys. One on an XR650R and one on a 690 adventure. They'd figured out the side loops off Indian Mountain Pass and ridden up to the top of Scout Mountain. They were still debating whether to head north on T1 or west on T2 when I had to leave. It sounded like they were having a good time. Good on 'em!

This year there is a rare opportunity for riders on large dirt bikes or dual sports to complete day one with a really spectacular finish. The BLM recently performed extensive trail maintenance on the Blackrock Canyon system and this summer it's possible to finish day one with a spectacular winding ridgetop approach to Pocatello. I'm quite confident that even most dual sports could do this finish this year.

Normally the route on the attached map is the province of lightweight dirt bikes. It's our favorite afternoon ride close to Chez Hillbilly and is part of our daily loop. It's completely spectacular and you should not miss the opportunity to ride this loop while conditions last. I've been riding these trails for 18 years and never seen them this good.

The map is attached. The route starts in the south end of Blackrock (where T1 enters the canyon) but proceeds all the way up the main road, past the whoops, to the top. Turn left and follow the 48" wide ATV trail around to the top of Chinese Peak. The indicated route ends right at the TID flagpole.

Cheers

T2 (all variants) is open. I managed to get across Crutcher Crossing July 4th. It's still a little deep but doable.

Have at it!

T1 is open up to the Magruder Corridor. We rode day 1 yesterday and it's in about average shape overall. The trails close to Utah have been freshly graded and are in great shape. Weston and Oxford Peak trails are not as good as last year but still a little better than average, Sedgewick Peak trails are average, the Boundary Trail is average and Chinese Peak trails are excellent. The overall day one news is about the same as always. Dirt bikes should have little trouble but good luck with dual sports.

I won't be around Friday, which is when you'll probably be coming through here, but if you come through Sat be sure to stop and say hello.

After several transits of T2 this year we think we've finally worked out the route across the western part of the state that involves the least number of gates to open and close. We've updated the gpx file to reflect this.

A solo rider completed T2 this week, most of it on a single day (July 23). This is the first complete trip we know about for this season.

T1 Day 1 update. A series of absolute gully-washing thunderstorms have decimated the Boundary Trail north of the infamous trail through the farmer's field. There are multiple downed trees and washouts. We do not recommend, under any circumstances, taking the boundary trail any farther north than the recommended route.

Martin, after getting back from our trip I edited an early post in my advrider trip report (post #5) essentially telling people that we agree with you that a dual sport bike is not the right bike for T1. I rode the Pete King Trail on my KLR and . . . let's just say it's a good thing I was wearing depends that day.

I also said that modifying the trip, even though it really does take away from the essential character of the trip, is still a fantastic ride, but they need to be realistic about really how much they need to change, and to not underestimate even a neutered version of the trip. Anyone considering using a dual sport for T1 will get more info on what we think that will entail for them as we complete the trip report.

Justin and I marvel at how you can ride that thing so fast! We stopped in Wallace. We could have gone on, but people had to get home to work. Even though we do the "slug race" version of it, it's an absolute blast.

Made it! Waiting for my shuttle in Priest lake right now. About 40 hours total riding time.

Today I just completed Day 1 of The Tour of Idaho. The first part from Jenkins Hollow to Oxford Ridge was just worked on so it would have been really fast, except for the cattle. North from Oxford Ridge all the way into Pocatello I had to contend with ATV riders, all of the camp grounds were packed. Usually I try to run this day during the week but so be it. I had to keep it safe so I didn't go for any speed records, just trail rode it and enjoyed the views. I followed Martins route all the way to the Boundary Trail just North of Lava Hot springs. I chose to take a more technical routing that, for the most part, runs parallel to Martins. Rather then turning East and running through the famous farmers field, Boulder Highway, and gravel/forest road, I stayed on the Boundary Trail and took it over Inkom Pass, and ran into Inkom and connected to the original route. The way I went is technical, for a little bike with little gear it is a blast. I made it in 5hr 45min moving total and just over 6hrs with stops. It was 124 miles. If anyone wants the track, I have it on my Garmin.
