If you are coming down the mountain you will see it from a fair way off. If you are coming up the road it's right out in front of the last farm on the right side of the road.

The difference between the Tour of Idaho as outlined by Martin and the modified trip we did last year (even if we would have made it to the end) is significant enough that I wonder if my trip report shouldn't have included "Tour of Idaho" in the title. The parts we rode were all on the real route, it was the intentionally omitted parts that made it a different trip (Oxford Basin, Massacre Mountain Loop), as did the fact that we used a support truck. If Gerard Butler rode the TID, he would ride the whole thing, and do it in 6 days or less. Still, I feel no shame in modifying the route a bit. It is still a serious challenge and a great time . . . "epic" even. I've tried to think of a name for modified versions of the TID but haven't come up with a good one yet. Candidates have included: TID Lite Adulterated TID Simplified TID Mission Possible TID Girl Scout Variant Utards' TID Route We're going again this summer, starting toward the end of July. We'll use a support truck again and ride it in 7 days instead of 6. We still won't ride Massacre Mnt. or Oxford Basin. In fact, we're going to create another route for Day 1 that starts in Logan Canyon, east of Franklin Basin. We are sleeping south of Lava Hot Springs and love that area, but the riding will still in parts be at least as difficult at the Oxford route sans Oxford Basin. I don't recommend against the original day one route at all. I didn't realize how awesome that area is until I rode there for TID. It is really amazing. It's just that this area is our back yard so we figured we try another way to Lava Hot Springs for fun. There will be 4 of us riding the entire way (assuming we make it), but numerous others of course want to at least ride some of it. Even with our modified route it will be difficult, so right now I'm trying to get all of the part-timers to recognize that they need to be up to speed if they want to go or it will create real problems. I'm worried that since we have a support truck and are skipping some of the worst segments people will think it will be easier than it actually will be. While we didn't finish the TID last year, and though some of our group could have finished it, it wasn't the tough parts that stopped us. We were just beat up after all those days of riding and felt that, as a group, the risks were starting increase (problems with bikes, at least three of our group said they were having trouble staying awake even while riding as they got close to Wallace). We're going to hit a few hot springs again. I'm going to try and not crash out this time.

The 2010 T2 routing is complete. A detailed route description are available at http://www.motorcyclejazz.com/TIDEW.htmThe gpx file is ready but we are still loading up the maps. We'd recommend waiting another couple of weeks before attempting the entire route due to the recent snows. cheers

Completely. The Bruneau Crossing would be a little tricky (I wouldn't recommend it solo) but otherwise eminently doable on atv's. There are several water crossings though so bring a snorkel. m

Scott Scott, Unless things change quite a bit July 20 should be completely safe this year (snow, snags and all). There are two places where snow generally persists until mid to late July - Oxford Peak (30 miles in) and the Magruder Corridor. The Magruder may actually be clear this year before Oxford. But I wouldn't guarantee anything before the middle of July. We are doing T1 at the very end of July. T2 is open right now except for crossing the Owyhee at Crutcher crossing. That variant won't be passable until July sometime. cheers m

Anyone taken a V-Strom on the T2 yet? Wondering if you went full knobies or just good DS tires?

No one that I know of. Probably doable on a V-Strom 650 with full on knobbies but I'd be very careful about which route I took on a V-Strom 1000. On either bike I'd stay away from the single track at Indian Mountain Pass and avoid the canyon crossings of the Bruneau and Owyhee rivers. On a V-Strom I'd recommend any of the northern variations in the western part of the state with the exception of Antelope Ridge into JV. In short - you'd have no trouble with 90% of the route on either bike but I'd be a little careful about the technical stuff on either. I'd also recommend not doing it solo on a large bike just in case you do dump it in an inconvenient spot. I rode a V-Strom 650 in a magazine test once (for motorcycle.com) with 7 other middle weight bikes and virtually every tester agreed that it was the best bike in the test by a wide margin. I think that the V-Strom 650 is one of the best bikes ever made. Good on ya! Cheers m

For those of you contemplating an early start on T1 this year.
Weather Service Bulletin issued 6/14/10:
Late Spring storm will affect eastern Idaho this week...
Another storm system will arrive in eastern Idaho beginning Tuesday. Strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening...and again on Wednesday. Strong winds...hail...and locally heavy downpours will be the main threats. Colder air is expected to arrive in the region by late Wednesday. By Wednesday night...snow levels may drop as low as 6000 feet for the central mountains and 7500 feet along the southern and eastern Highlands. Snow will return to higher elevations and several inches of accumulation are possible by late in the week.
Monitor NOAA Weather Radio for the latest information...forecasts...and possible statements about this late Spring storm.

...More rain and even mountain snow for eastern Idaho this week...
Another storm system will affect eastern Idaho beginning Tuesday and continuing into Thursday. This will bring the possibility of strong to severe storms Tuesday afternoon and evening...and again on Wednesday. The main threats will be strong winds...hail and locally heavy downpours. This storm will also bring colder air with it. Snow levels will drop by Wednesday night to between 6000 and 7000 feet for the Western Mountain ranges...and between 7500 and 8000 feet farther east. This will mean an inch or two of wet snow for the most of the higher elevations. However...areas above 8000 feet in the central mountains could see 4 to 6 inches before the storm is over. Please stay tuned to later forecasts and possible statements about this latest Spring storm to affect eastern Idaho.

A buddy and I are planning to do the northern half of the T1 on 4th of July weekend. Challis to Sandpoint. Anyone else planning the same?
We live up here so this weekend we're going to do the Priest Lake sections, we'll let you know how it is snow-wise.
Anyone know if Magruder Corridor is open yet?

Anyone know if Magruder Corridor is open yet? My guess is that the Magruder will not be passable until the middle of July sometime. Check with the Red River Ranger station. The Magruder is never officially open or closed, just passable or impassable. The last time I checked (just a week ago) there was still considerable snow up high. This weeks storms might have increased the snow total. m

Yaa, we called Red River late Fri afternoon and the road was only passable to MM 10.6 so it has some melting to do sounds like. I guess the 4x4 guys go up there and winch their way through the drifts which clears them out pretty quick after the ruts get cut. Probably won't be clear by the weekend of the 4th though.
The other <known> obstacle is before Selway Falls on the ATV trail, it's washed out for about 2 1/2 miles. We called Moose Creek RS and they said they don't have enough resources to clear the trails right away and there are a couple of big slides they're dealing with. So that's not looking so great either.
Our plan as of now is to moto south and get as far as we can, probably Selway Falls, and then moto back north taking the alternate routes of the loops. Should be close to 1000 miles or so roundtrip and still a really nice route.

Rode down to Crutcher Crossing on the Owyhee from the north yesterday to see how high the water was. It's about 3 feet right now. It'll probably be mid-July earliest before it's safe to cross for a solo rider. The climb out (going north) has a few rock steps that will challenge dual sport bikes but is otherwise in good shape.

If you or your group are planning on having us monitor your trip via the SPOT Messenger service or provide a shuttle service you'll need to confirm soon as our season is filling up. First come first serve.
We charge $25 a day for on call monitoring of your position via SPOT Messenger.
Depending on the number of bikes it's about 50 cents a mile for the shuttle service. For T1 the shuttle from Priest Lake back to Utah this amounts to about $600 and for the T2 shuttle from Jordan Valley back to Alpine this comes around half of that. It might be less to just bring parts or supplies depending on the location (access by small car). We can also arrange for safe parking for cars in Pocatello and a shuttle ride to the start of T1.
Have fun!
