Dan - last week of July again? Steven, Mark - are you in?

I am all for another casual trip with short days and lots of photos and video. I'm planning one using our group trip as a forerun for my solo in August.

Great photos, as usual. From what section/day are they from?

Thanks,

Jack

Hola,

Thanks. This is something a little different that we are still putting together. A shorter, more dual sport friendly Tour variant. We've ridden all of the individual sections but what remains is to do the whole thing at once. You never know how a Tour route is actually going to work until you do just that. We are going to try to put the whole thing together before the snow flies (which could be any day now). When we do there will be an entire page devoted to it.

hasta la pasta

We are in the process of updating the TID route description to incorporate changes for 2009. Some of these updates have already been made (to the written descriptions). We'll have updated maps and gpx files soon.

Dan, Larry,

Let's start talking 2009 dates. I'm all for the last week in July - first week in August once again.

I think that we should start Friday July 24 this year. This should be at least a week or so after the Magruder opens. The advantage to starting early is the amount of daylight.

I'm looking forward to it. I would like to do it as early as we can.

I have no conflicts that I know of. I'll check with my coworkers tomorrow to make sure that no one has already claimed that week. Most likely I'm good. What's the projected date we'd be back in Pokey?

That depends on how fast you all want to ride. Last year Dan and I did it tourist style in 5 trail days and it was great. That pace makes for relaxed days with plenty of time for late starts, lots of pics, and early arrivals in the evenings. I am all for that, or for riding it straight through, or anything in between - whatever you and Dan want to do. My role is moral support and encouragement. This trip is a pre run for me. A week or so later I am going to ride it myself and do it Baja style.

This will be an adventure that will remind you very much of the time that we did the Nose. The parallels are striking. The biggest being the amount of work involved. Right behind that the fact that even though you are working your ass off the scenery is stunning all of the time. There are a few places along the Tour that no matter how many times I ride them I can't believe where I am each time (just like our days in Yosemite). Weird but true.

Do you remember when we did Wheat Thin in The Valley? Or Super Slab in Eldorado? This trip has a lot of those kind of moments. It will definitely bring back some old times.

Not surprised to hear that the ride is an experience a lot like a big climb. Just hope we don't get nearly so thirsty as on a wall. I'd hate to pass out while flying down a gravel road.Anxious I've marked my calender as off from work from 5:00 p.m. on the 22nd, to return by Aug. 1. How's that sound?

That's what they make the OGIO Flight vest with 2.0 liter hydration bladder for! And guess what - no haul bags.

August 1 is cutting it a little close but you should be OK as long as no one has any trouble. If possible you should plan on the following monday.

OK - here is the Team Hillbilly/No Worries tentative schedule for the 2009 TOI

Friday July 24 - Utah to Pocatello - Chez Hillbilly
Saturday July 25 - pull maintenance and refit bikes for the rest of the trip - Chez Hillbilly
Sunday July 26 - Pocatello to Arco - DK Motel
Monday July 27 - Arco to Challis (Challis Motor Lodge)
Tuesday July 28 - Challis to Elk City (Elk City Inn)
Wednesday July 29 - Elk City to Powell Ranger Station (Locsha Lodge)
Thursday July 30 - Powell Ranger Station to Wallace (Ryan Hotel)
Friday July 31 - Wallace to Upper Priest Lake (River Country Motel in Priest River)
Saturday August 1 - return to Pocatello

These are very easy days that allow late starts, early arrivals and plenty of time for photos, video, sightseeing and the inevitable unanticipated events without compromising the 8/1 wrap. We could double up on most of these tentative days and still be done well before dark each evening.

Let me know if this works. If so I'll book the rooms.

I have begun the process of uploading high resolution topographic maps for both T1 and T2. There is a link to the page in the Tour of Idaho route description. This project should be complete within a few weeks.

I am in the process of adding notes to the T1 map set so that some of the crucial directions are displayed right on the map with the trail marking. This process will take a few weeks to complete (and to some degree will be ongoing) but I will post a notice here when I am done with the first round of notes. Day one, btw, is complete.

What's happening? You guys getting ready for the ride?

I'm trying to figure out how not to get divorced if I load up my bike and head up there. Silicon Valley is not the place to be if your looking for work right now.

Taking the 450X in for a top end rebuild today just in case I work it all out.

Friggin heat wave down here, the last couple of days have been in the 90's. Arghhh! hard pan, dust and muddy sweat.
